Top Rts Games
It's that time of the year again - a period of intense list-making, endless and heated game debates and subsequent fistfights and black eyes as a result. It's also a bumper time to be a gamer. Regardless of your console preference, the closing months of 2009 were chock-full of amazing gaming experiences and we've spent a good long while dissecting all of our reviews and gaming sessions to determine IGN AU's Top 10 Games of 2009.
When it comes to choose the best real time strategy games, then here are the top 10 best real time strategy games.
We've ranked the best games from ten to one, as well as listed a few honourable mentions for great titles that didn't quite crack the top 10. This isn't just an objective, score-based list, either; we've placed a lot emphasis on the fun-factor - as well as how the games moved their genres forward and contributed to the wider creative industry. Guerilla Games PlayStation 3 Killzone 2 was exactly the kind of shooter PS3-dedicated fans were clamouring for – and Guerilla Games ultimately delivered on massive expectations with one of the best games of the year in our books. A supremely detailed and immersive shooting experience from the opening moments, Killzone 2 also has a compelling and addictive multiplayer mode that ate up plenty of hours in the office.

More than anything though, the game made the PS3 hardware sing, marking the prettiest console game available for a while there. Until came along, that is. 'With Killzone 3 still a ways off (we imagine), Killzone 2 has enough quality content and technological prowess to stand the test of time for PS3 owners.' Double Fine Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 You know what? For all of 's sincere humour, great ideas and production values, the core real-time strategy gameplay and niche setting was ultimately too much to contend with for some players.
Of course, it has its share of unrefined moments too – but what developer Double Fine has done with Brutal Legend demonstrates that original thought is still possible in game design. Using hard metal as a cultural touchstone, Brutal Legend has a better setlist than just about every Guitar Hero game out there and it absolutely caters to (and resonates with) this kind of audience with unapologetic single-mindedness. Still outstanding, we contend – and what's more, it has integrity. 'From the opening moments of the title screen introduction, you know you're in for a unique experience. Tim Schafer and Jack Black - a marriage made in rock heaven.
Or is it rock hell?' Capcom Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 / PC Capcom's beloved fighting series returned to arcades and living rooms with a vengeance this year, bringing the series forwards by looking lovingly backwards. With a striking illustrative style to its 3D rendered characters and environments, the game immediately harkens back to the stylised 2D roots of the series' most popular entry, Street Fighter II. However, entry number IV also takes the series' already refined gameplay and adds just enough new content, characters and modes to make it just as compelling for long-time fans as could be hoped for. In multiplayer bouts, it absolutely shines. As a sequel, Capcom shows how to be reverent and relevant at the same time. 'The real strength of this game design is that it's at once progressive and inclusionary.
You don't have to come to the table with incredible technical skill to be good at Street Fighter IV – it's built around a simpler foundation than the last few iterations, but still has depth and cool new systems to spare. And damn it looks good. RedLynx Xbox Live Arcade Trials started out as a free PC flash title, and has since grown into something incredible. Is one of those rare low-key releases, only available as a downloadable arcade game, that manages to outshine most other big-budget titles on the strength of its gameplay alone. Simple and addictive, Trials HD is all about physics-based motorcycle jumping, akin to a prettied up blend of Excitebike and Takeshi's Castle. You control the bike on a strictly 2D plane, moving it forwards and backwards and adjusting the up and down tilt.
Beyond this, everything else rests with your powers of estimation and your patience. With an instant restart, your constant mess-ups never become grating enough to keep you from having one more go – and like some of our favourite games of all time, its appeal has not lessened with time. That, we think, says a lot. 'Yes, the visuals are slick and simple. And yes, the gameplay is intuitive, brilliant and at times hair-pullingly challenging. But perhaps the most crucial reason Trials HD is a game you'll keep coming back to is the leaderboards.
You may be ranked 79,843 in the world on a particular course, but if you can come out on top amongst your friends, you've got serious bragging rights.'
